No. FocusKey is completely passive and requires zero electricity, batteries, charging, or software updates. The NFC chip inside is powered electromagnetically by your phone's NFC reader for a fraction of a second during a tap.

FocusKey is compatible with all NFC-capable smartphones. This includes iPhone Xs and newer running iOS 13+ (support coming soon), and almost all modern Android devices (Android app is available now).
